Prologue to the Tattamungatails...

It was seven o'clock. "Time for bed!" said Mom.
Sydney looked up from playing pirate rabbits. "Not yet."
"Yes, yet."
Sydney piled most of the rabbits back into the stuffed animal basket, but one, Tattamungatail, stayed in the crook of her arm. Sydney submitted, with dignity, to the process of putting on pink Winnie-the-Pooh pajamas. Tattamungatail watched through her legs, upside down at the edge of the changing table.

The quilt and blanket and sheet were pulled back, the pillows were arranged, and Sydney and Tattamungatail settled into the bed. "Now read!" Sydney commanded. It was just like every other night.
Sydney and Tattamungatail listened. Sydney sometimes pointed at the pictures or asked a question. Tattamungatail didn't. After the story, there were prayers, followed by incantations against spiders. Then, "Tell me a story!"
"About what?"
Sydney thought a minute, posed as she had seen thinkers pose, one hand up to her face. Then she leaned back against Mom and said, "About me and Tattamungatail and her magic gold nose and the pirates and how we all played together and ate ice cream."
"Once upon a time, Sydney and Tattamungatail went sailing on a blue sea in a little boat..."
The story ended in a hug, a kiss, and a request for a drink of water. After one more hug, Mom left the room. The train light shone. Tattamungatail looked at it dreamily. Sydney slept.
And Mom went and wrote the story down so Sydney could keep it.
